Growth Habit: Fast-growing deciduous to semi-evergreen tree reaching approximately 5–12 metres at maturity. Can be regularly pruned to maintain a smaller, bushier tree for easier harvesting.
Germination: Sow seeds 10–20 mm deep in a free-draining seed-raising mix. Keep warm (25–30°C) and consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination typically occurs within 1–3 weeks.
Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Moringa grows best in warm, sunny, frost-free locations with well-drained soil. In the South Island, it is best grown in a greenhouse, conservatory or large container that can be moved to a protected position during winter, as it is sensitive to frost.
Leaves: Produces abundant feathery green leaves that are widely regarded as one of the most nutrient-dense leafy vegetables in the world. The young leaves can be harvested continuously throughout the growing season.
Taste: The young leaves have a mild earthy flavour with subtle peppery notes, similar to spinach with a hint of horseradish. The immature seed pods, commonly known as "drumsticks," have a flavour similar to green beans or asparagus and are popular in curries and soups.
Flowers: Produces masses of fragrant creamy-white flowers that attract bees and other beneficial pollinators.
Harvest: Young leaves can often be harvested within 3–6 months of sowing, while seed pods are typically produced within 1–2 years under ideal growing conditions.
Care: Prefers full sun, sandy or free-draining soil and moderate watering. Once established, Moringa is highly drought tolerant and responds well to regular pruning, encouraging fresh leafy growth.
