Seed Type: Fresh Coast Huckleberry seeds.
Origin: Pacific Coast of North America.
Growth Habit: Evergreen shrub reaching approximately 1–3 metres at maturity, with glossy leaves and a naturally attractive shape.
Germination: Sow seeds on the surface of an acidic, free-draining seed mix and press in lightly. Keep moist, cool to mild and in bright indirect light. Germination can be slow and may take several weeks to several months.
Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Coast Huckleberry grows best in cooler, sheltered spots with acidic soil and afternoon shade. In the South Island, it is well suited to mild coastal and cooler regions with consistent moisture.
Fruit: Produces small dark purple to black berries with a sweet-tart flavour, excellent for fresh eating, baking and preserves.
Flowers: Produces small pink to white bell-shaped flowers that attract bees and other pollinators.
Fruiting: Typically begins producing berries within 3–5 years from seed under good growing conditions.
Care: Prefers acidic soil, consistent moisture, good drainage and protection from harsh afternoon sun in warmer areas.
