Quantity: 1 Seed
Rare: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is a rare species in NZ and difficult to source. We carefully source quality seeds from trusted growers here and around the world, often importing small quantities that are not readily available locally.
Seed Type: Fresh Bilberry seeds.
Origin: Europe and Northern Asia.
Growth Habit: Low-growing deciduous shrub reaching approximately 30–60 cm tall, ideal for berry gardens, edible landscaping and large containers.
Germination: Sow seeds on the surface of a fine, acidic seed-raising mix and lightly press in. Keep cool to mild, moist and bright. Germination can be slow and may take 1–3 months or longer.
Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Bilberry is best suited to cooler, elevated or shaded areas with acidic soil. In the South Island, it is generally better suited to the cooler climate and can grow well in acidic soil with consistent moisture.
Fruit: Produces small dark-blue to black berries with a rich, sweet-tart flavour.
Flowers: Produces small pinkish-white bell-shaped flowers in spring.
Fruiting: Typically begins producing berries within 2–4 years from seed under good growing conditions.
Care: Prefers acidic, moist, free-draining soil, partial shade to full sun in cooler areas, and consistent watering.
