Seed Type: Fresh Thimbleberry seeds.
Origin: North America.
Growth Habit: Deciduous shrub reaching approximately 1–2.5 metres tall, forming canes with large soft leaves.
Germination: Thimbleberry seeds can be slow and may benefit from cold stratification. Sow seeds in a free-draining seed mix and keep moist. Germination may take several weeks to several months.
Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Thimbleberry is best grown in cooler, sheltered positions with partial shade and consistent moisture. In the South Island, it is better suited to the cooler climate and can grow well in a sheltered garden or food forest setting.
Fruit: Produces soft red berries with a sweet-tart flavour, similar to a delicate raspberry.
Flowers: Produces attractive white flowers that are popular with bees and pollinators.
Fruiting: Typically begins producing berries within 2–3 years from seed under good growing conditions.
Care: Prefers fertile free-draining soil, consistent moisture and partial shade in warmer areas.
