Seed Type: Fresh Hawaiian Solo Sunrise Papaya seeds.
Origin: Hawaii.
Growth Habit: Fast-growing tropical fruiting plant reaching approximately 2–4 metres at maturity. Ideal for home gardens, orchards and large containers while young.
Germination: Sow fresh seeds 5–10 mm deep in a free-draining seed-raising mix. Keep warm (25–30°C) and consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination typically occurs within 2–6 weeks.
Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Hawaiian Solo Sunrise Papaya grows well in warm, sunny, frost-free locations with protection from strong winds. In the South Island, it is best grown in a greenhouse, conservatory or large container that can be moved to a warm, sheltered position during cooler months.
Fruit: Produces small to medium-sized pear-shaped fruit with smooth yellow skin and rich orange-red flesh. The flavour is exceptionally sweet, juicy and aromatic, making it one of the finest papaya varieties for eating fresh.
Flowers: Produces creamy white fragrant flowers. Plants may produce male, female or hermaphrodite flowers, with hermaphrodite plants generally producing the highest quality fruit.
Fruiting: Typically begins producing fruit within 9–18 months from seed under good growing conditions.
Care: Prefers full sun, fertile free-draining soil and regular watering. Feed regularly during the growing season to encourage rapid growth and heavy fruit production. Protect young plants from frost.
