Quantity: 1 Seed

Rare Rating: Extremely Rare ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We carefully source premium-quality seeds from trusted growers in New Zealand and around the world. Due to New Zealand's strict import requirements, international freight costs and biosecurity regulations, these seeds are not commonly available locally. Be among the few growers in New Zealand cultivating this unique variety.

Seed Type: Fresh Black Bat Plant seeds.

Origin: Southeast Asia.

Growth Habit: Clump-forming tropical perennial reaching approximately 60–120 cm tall. Produces lush broad green foliage and spectacular exotic flowers, making it perfect for tropical gardens, conservatories and large containers.

Germination: Sow seeds on the surface of a moist, free-draining seed-raising mix and lightly cover with a thin layer of fine mix or vermiculite. Keep warm (25–30°C), humid and consistently moist. Germination typically occurs within 4–12 weeks, although some seeds may take several months.

Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Black Bat Plant grows best in warm, humid, frost-free locations with protection from direct afternoon sun. In the South Island, it is best grown in a greenhouse, conservatory or indoors as a houseplant where warmth and humidity can be maintained year-round.

Flowers: Produces spectacular deep purple to almost black flowers with dramatic wing-like bracts and long whisker-like filaments that can reach over 60 cm in length. The flowers resemble a flying bat, making this one of the most unique flowering plants in the world.

Taste: This species is grown for its spectacular ornamental flowers rather than for eating. The plant is not considered edible.

Flowering: Typically begins flowering within 2–3 years from seed under good growing conditions.

Care: Prefers bright filtered light or partial shade, rich free-draining soil, high humidity and consistent moisture. Avoid direct hot afternoon sun and protect from frost. Regular feeding during the growing season encourages healthy foliage and flowering.
