We carefully source premium-quality seeds from trusted growers in New Zealand and around the world. Due to New Zealand's strict import requirements, international freight costs and biosecurity regulations, these seeds are not commonly available locally. Be among the few growers in New Zealand cultivating this unique variety.

Seed Type: Fresh Acuminata Banana seeds.

Origin: Southeast Asia.

Growth Habit: Fast-growing tropical banana reaching approximately 3–7 metres tall. Produces lush green foliage and forms attractive clumps over time, making it ideal for tropical gardens and large containers.

Germination: Soak seeds in warm water for 48–72 hours before sowing 10–20 mm deep in a free-draining seed-raising mix. Keep warm (28–32°C) and consistently moist. Germination typically occurs within 4–12 weeks, although some seeds may take several months.

Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Acuminata Banana grows well outdoors in warm, sheltered, frost-free gardens with rich, fertile soil. In the South Island, it is best grown in a greenhouse, conservatory or large container that can be moved to a protected position during winter.

Fruit: Produces small green bananas that ripen to yellow. Unlike modern commercial bananas, the fruit contains numerous hard black seeds and is primarily grown for ornamental, breeding and collector purposes.

Taste: The ripe fruit has a mildly sweet, banana-like flavour, but the numerous large seeds mean there is very little edible flesh. It is grown mainly for its historical significance, ornamental beauty and as the wild ancestor of modern dessert bananas.

Flowers: Produces beautiful drooping purple flower buds followed by cream-coloured flowers that develop into attractive clusters of fruit.

Fruiting: Typically begins producing fruit within 2–4 years from seed under good growing conditions.

Care: Prefers full sun, fertile free-draining soil and regular watering throughout the growing season. Feed frequently to encourage rapid growth and lush tropical foliage. Protect from frost and strong winds.
