Seed Type: Fresh Holly Leaf Cherry seeds.
Origin: California and Baja California.
Growth Habit: Evergreen shrub or small tree reaching approximately 3–8 metres at maturity, with dense glossy foliage and a naturally tidy shape.
Germination: Soak seeds for 24 hours before sowing 10–20 mm deep in a free-draining seed mix. Seeds may benefit from a cool period before germination and can take several weeks to several months to sprout.
Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Holly Leaf Cherry grows well in sunny, sheltered positions and is more drought tolerant once established. In the South Island, it can be grown in mild areas or protected positions, with young plants sheltered from severe frosts.
Fruit: Produces small dark red to black cherries with edible flesh surrounding a hard stone.
Flowers: Produces fragrant clusters of small white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators.
Fruiting: Typically begins producing fruit within 3–6 years from seed under good growing conditions.
Care: Prefers full sun to partial shade, free-draining soil and moderate watering while establishing. Once mature it is relatively drought tolerant.
