Be among the few growers in New Zealand cultivating this unique variety.

Seed Type: Fresh Red Dragon Fruit seeds.

Origin: Central and South America.

Growth Habit: Fast-growing climbing cactus reaching approximately 3–6 metres with support. Perfect for trellises, posts, fences and large containers.

Germination: Sow seeds on the surface of a free-draining cactus or seed-raising mix and lightly press them into the soil without covering. Keep warm (22–30°C), humid and consistently moist. Germination typically occurs within 1–4 weeks.

Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Red Dragon Fruit grows well outdoors in warm, sunny, frost-free areas with a sturdy climbing support. In the South Island, it is best grown in a greenhouse, conservatory or large container that can be protected from frost during winter.

Fruit: Produces oval to elongated bright red fruit with vibrant red flesh speckled with tiny edible black seeds. Mature plants can produce several crops each year under ideal conditions.

Taste: The flesh is sweet, juicy and refreshing with flavours often compared to a blend of kiwi fruit, pear and watermelon. It is delicious eaten fresh, blended into smoothies, fruit salads and desserts.

Flowers: Produces spectacular large fragrant white flowers that bloom for just one night, attracting bees and other nocturnal pollinators.

Fruiting: Typically begins producing fruit within 2–4 years from seed under good growing conditions.

Care: Prefers full sun, well-drained cactus soil and regular watering during the growing season. Provide a sturdy support for climbing stems and avoid waterlogging. Feed with a balanced fertiliser during active growth to encourage flowering and fruit production.
