Ziziphus mauritiana – Indian Jujube Seeds

Grow one of the world's most resilient and productive fruit trees from seed. Indian Jujube is a fast-growing fruit tree prized for its crisp, sweet fruit, exceptional drought tolerance and ability to thrive in hot climates. These seeds are ideal for growers wanting to raise this unique and rewarding fruit tree from seed.

Quantity: 1 Seed
Rare: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is a rare species in NZ and difficult to source. We carefully source quality seeds from trusted growers here and around the world, often importing small quantities that are not readily available locally.

Seed Type: Fresh Indian Jujube seeds.

Origin: South Asia.

Growth Habit: Fast-growing deciduous fruit tree reaching approximately 5–10 metres at maturity with a broad, rounded canopy. Ideal for home gardens, orchards and lifestyle properties.

Germination: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing 10–20 mm deep in a free-draining seed-raising mix. Keep warm (25–30°C) and consistently moist. Germination typically occurs within 2–6 weeks.

Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Indian Jujube grows well outdoors in a warm, sunny position and is well suited to subtropical and warm temperate regions. In the South Island, it is best grown in a greenhouse, warm frost-free microclimate or large container that can be protected from winter frosts while young.

Fruit: Produces round to oval fruit that ripens from green to golden-yellow or reddish-brown. The flesh is crisp, juicy and apple-like when fresh, becoming sweeter and chewier as it fully ripens.

Flowers: Produces small fragrant yellow-green flowers that attract bees and other beneficial pollinators.

Fruiting: Typically begins producing fruit within 3–5 years from seed under good growing conditions.

Care: Prefers full sun, fertile free-draining soil and regular watering while establishing. Once mature, Indian Jujube is highly drought tolerant and requires very little maintenance.
