Seed Quantity: 1 Seed
Seed Type:
Dried Roselle seeds.
Origin: Tropical Africa.
Growth Habit: Fast-growing annual or short-lived perennial reaching approximately 1.5-2.5 metres tall.

Caring for Your Roselle Seedling

  • Plant in a full sun position receiving at least 6–8 hours of sunlight each day.
  • Choose well-draining, fertile soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
  • Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes, but avoid waterlogging.
  • Feed every 2-4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage vigorous growth.
  • In cooler regions, grow in a large pot so it can be moved into a warm, sheltered position or greenhouse during cold weather.
  • Harvest the bright red calyces once they become thick, fleshy, and deep red, usually a few weeks after the flowers fade.

Climate: Roselle grows best in the warmer parts of the North Island with a long frost-free season. In the South Island, grow in a greenhouse or a warm, sheltered location for the best harvest.

Fruit: Produces bright red fleshy calyces surrounding the seed pods. The flavour is tart, cranberry-like and excellent for drinks and preserves.

Flowers: Large pale yellow flowers with dark red centres bloom throughout the growing season.

Fruiting: Harvest calyces approximately 4–6 months after sowing.

Care: Prefers fertile well-drained soil, regular watering and full sun.

Health Benefits

The calyces are naturally rich in:

  • Vitamin C to support the immune system.
  • Antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress.
  • Dietary Fibre for healthy digestion.
  • Natural plant compounds traditionally enjoyed in herbal teas.
  • Refreshing tart flavour ideal for teas, jams and syrups.
