Seed Type: Fresh Ashwagandha seeds.
Origin: India, the Middle East and North Africa.
Growth Habit: Fast-growing perennial shrub reaching approximately 50–150 cm tall. Produces soft grey-green foliage, small green flowers and bright orange-red berries enclosed in papery husks.
Germination: Sow seeds 5–10 mm deep in a free-draining seed-raising mix. Keep warm (20–30°C) and consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination typically occurs within 1–3 weeks.
Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Ashwagandha grows well outdoors in warm, sunny locations with well-drained soil. In the South Island, it is best grown as a summer annual, in a greenhouse, or in containers that can be protected from heavy frosts during winter.
Fruit: Produces small bright orange-red berries enclosed in decorative papery husks. While the berries are edible when ripe, the plant is primarily cultivated for its medicinal roots.
Taste: The roots have a strong earthy, slightly bitter flavour with a subtle horse-like aroma, which is reflected in the name "Ashwagandha." They are commonly dried and used in herbal teas, powders and traditional preparations.
Flowers: Produces small greenish-yellow flowers that develop into bright red berries enclosed in attractive lantern-like husks.
Harvest: The roots are typically harvested 5–7 months after sowing, once the foliage begins to yellow and die back.
Care: Prefers full sun, sandy or well-drained soil and moderate watering. Once established, Ashwagandha is highly drought tolerant and thrives with minimal maintenance.
