Seed Type: Fresh Suan Zao Ren seeds.
Origin: China.
Growth Habit: Deciduous shrub or small tree reaching approximately 3–8 metres at maturity with an attractive spreading canopy.
Germination: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing 10–20 mm deep in a free-draining seed-raising mix. Keep warm (20–28°C) and consistently moist. Germination typically occurs within 3–8 weeks.
Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Suan Zao Ren grows well outdoors in a sunny position. In the South Island, it tolerates cooler conditions better than many tropical fruit trees but young plants should still be protected from severe frosts.
Fruit: Produces small reddish-brown fruit with a pleasant sweet-tart flavour once fully ripe.
Flowers: Produces clusters of small yellow-green flowers that attract bees and other beneficial pollinators.
Fruiting: Typically begins producing fruit within 3–5 years from seed.
Care: Prefers full sun, fertile well-drained soil and moderate watering while establishing. Once mature it is drought tolerant and hardy.
