Be among the few growers in New Zealand cultivating this unique variety.

Seed Type: Fresh Saluyot (Jute) seeds.

Origin: Tropical Africa and Asia.

Growth Habit: Fast-growing annual leafy plant reaching approximately 1–3 metres tall. Ideal for vegetable gardens, raised beds and large containers.

Germination: Sow seeds 5–10 mm deep in a free-draining seed-raising mix. Keep warm (22–30°C) and consistently moist. Germination typically occurs within 5–14 days.

Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Saluyot grows exceptionally well throughout the warmer months in full sun. In the South Island, it is best grown as a summer annual after the last frost, or started indoors and transplanted once the weather has warmed.

Leaves: Produces tender green leaves with a mild, spinach-like flavour that develop a slightly silky texture when cooked. Young leaves and shoots are harvested continuously throughout the growing season.

Flowers: Produces small yellow flowers that are followed by slender seed pods if allowed to mature.

Harvest: Leaves can usually be harvested 6–8 weeks after sowing and continue producing for many months with regular picking.

Care: Prefers full sun, fertile free-draining soil and regular watering. Harvest young leaves frequently to encourage fresh, tender growth throughout the season.
