Quantity: 1 Seedling
Rare Rating: Uncommon ⭐⭐☆☆☆
We carefully source premium-quality seedlings from trusted growers in New Zealand. White Sapote is not widely available through local garden centres, making it a unique addition to your edible garden.
Plant Type: Healthy White Sapote (Casimiroa edulis) seedling.
Origin: Central Mexico and Central America.
Growth Habit: Fast-growing evergreen tree reaching approximately 5 to 10 metres at maturity, although it can be kept smaller with regular pruning. Ideal for home orchards and large gardens.
Planting: Plant in a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, free-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, plant at the same depth as it was growing in the pot, backfill with soil, water thoroughly and apply mulch around the base while keeping it clear of the trunk.
Climate: To get the best start, protect young plants from heavy frost during their first few winters. In the North Island, White Sapote grows well outdoors in full sun. In the South Island, plant in the warmest, most sheltered location available or grow in a large container that can be protected during severe frosts.
Fruit: Produces smooth green to yellow fruit with creamy white flesh that is exceptionally sweet, rich and custard-like. The fruit is delicious eaten fresh or used in smoothies, desserts and ice cream.
Flowers: Produces small, fragrant greenish-yellow flowers during spring that attract pollinators.
Fruiting: Seedlings typically begin producing fruit within 5 to 8 years, depending on growing conditions. Grafted trees usually fruit much sooner.
Care: Prefers full sun, fertile well-drained soil and regular watering while establishing. Feed with a balanced fruit tree fertiliser during spring and summer. Prune lightly to maintain shape and encourage strong branching.
