Chinese Bayberry is an attractive evergreen tree that produces striking deep red fruit with a unique sweet-tart flavour and exceptional ornamental value. These fresh seeds are ideal for growers wanting to raise this rare and rewarding fruit tree from seed.
Seed Type: Fresh Chinese Bayberry seeds.
Origin: China and Southeast Asia.
Growth Habit: Attractive evergreen tree reaching 5–15 metres at maturity. Suitable for home gardens, orchards and lifestyle properties.
Climate: Thrives in warm temperate to subtropical climates. Prefers full sun to partial shade and protection from severe frosts while young.
Germination: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing 10–15 mm deep in a free-draining seed-raising mix. Keep warm (20–25°C) and consistently moist. Germination can take several weeks to several months.
Fruit: Produces round, deep red fruit with a distinctive bumpy surface. The flesh is juicy, sweet and slightly tangy with flavours often compared to a combination of strawberry, cherry and pomegranate.
Flowers: Small greenish-yellow flowers appear in spring and are pollinated by the wind.
Fruiting: Typically begins producing fruit within 5–8 years from seed under good growing conditions.
Care: Prefers slightly acidic, well-drained soil, regular watering while establishing and a warm, sheltered position. Mulching helps retain moisture and encourage healthy growth.
