Seed Type: Fresh Pink Velvet Banana seeds.
Origin: Assam, India and the Eastern Himalayas.
Growth Habit: Fast-growing ornamental banana reaching approximately 2–4 metres tall. Produces lush tropical foliage and striking bright pink fruit, making it an outstanding feature plant for tropical gardens.
Germination: Soak seeds in warm water for 48–72 hours before sowing 10–20 mm deep in a free-draining seed-raising mix. Keep warm (28–32°C) and consistently moist. Germination typically occurs within 4–12 weeks, although some seeds may take several months.
Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Pink Velvet Banana grows well in warm, sheltered, frost-free gardens with rich soil and regular moisture. In the South Island, it is best grown in a greenhouse, conservatory or large container that can be moved to a protected position during winter.
Fruit: Produces spectacular bright pink, velvety bananas that split open naturally when ripe to reveal creamy white flesh and glossy black seeds. The fruit is ornamental and edible, although it contains numerous large seeds.
Taste: The soft white flesh has a mildly sweet, banana-like flavour with subtle tropical notes. Due to the large number of seeds, the fruit is primarily grown for its extraordinary ornamental value rather than as an eating banana.
Flowers: Produces beautiful cream to pale yellow banana flowers followed by vibrant pink fruit that create an exceptional tropical display.
Fruiting: Typically begins producing fruit within 2–4 years from seed under good growing conditions.
Care: Prefers full sun to partial shade, fertile free-draining soil and regular watering. Feed frequently during the growing season to encourage vigorous growth. Protect from frost and strong winds.
