We carefully source premium-quality seeds from trusted growers in New Zealand and around the world. Due to New Zealand's strict import requirements, international freight costs, and biosecurity regulations, these seeds are not commonly available locally. Be among the few growers in New Zealand cultivating this unique variety.
Seed Type: Fresh Jaboticaba seeds.
Origin: Brazil.
1. Potting
Plant your germinated seed in a small pot (8–12 cm) using a rich, well-draining potting mix. Place the seed so the sprout is pointing upwards and cover with approximately 5–10 mm of soil.
2. Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Jaboticabas enjoy regular watering and dislike drying out, especially while young.
3. Light
Place in a warm, bright location with filtered sunlight. Avoid intense afternoon sun until the seedling has developed several sets of leaves.
4. Temperature
Ideal growing temperatures are 18–30°C. Protect from frost during the first few years. In cooler parts of New Zealand, grow in a greenhouse or keep in a sheltered position over winter.
5. Feeding
Once the seedling has produced several sets of true leaves, begin feeding every 4–6 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength.
6. Repotting
As the roots fill the pot, move into progressively larger containers. Jaboticabas have relatively shallow root systems and appreciate regular repotting as they grow.
Growing in New Zealand
- North Island: Grows well outdoors in frost-free or lightly frosted areas with some protection while young.
- South Island: Best grown in a greenhouse, conservatory, or large container that can be protected from winter frost.
Fruit: Produces round, dark purple to black fruit directly on the trunk and branches. The flesh is sweet, juicy and aromatic with a flavour often compared to grapes, lychees and muscat.
Flowers: Produces masses of small white fluffy flowers directly on the trunk and branches before fruit develops, creating a spectacular display.
Fruiting: Typically begins producing fruit within 5–10 years from seed under good growing conditions, depending on the variety and growing conditions.
Care: Prefers full sun to partial shade, fertile slightly acidic free-draining soil and regular watering. Mulching and consistent moisture encourage healthy growth.
