Be among the few growers in New Zealand cultivating this unique variety.

Seed Type: Fresh Himalayan Blue Sausage Fruit seeds.

Origin: Himalayan regions of China, Nepal and Northern India.

Growth Habit: Fast-growing deciduous ornamental tree reaching approximately 6–15 metres at maturity. Produces a broad canopy with large tropical-looking leaves, making it an outstanding feature tree.

Germination: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing 10–15 mm deep in a free-draining seed-raising mix. Keep warm (20–25°C) and consistently moist. Germination typically occurs within 4–12 weeks, although some seeds may take longer.

Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Himalayan Blue Sausage Fruit grows well in warm, sheltered gardens with fertile, moist soil. In the South Island, it performs best in protected locations with shelter from severe frosts while young, although established trees are more cold tolerant than many tropical species.

Fruit: Produces spectacular elongated sausage-shaped fruit that ripens to an extraordinary metallic blue colour, often growing in hanging clusters. The fruit creates one of the most striking ornamental displays of any tree.

Taste: When fully ripe, the fruit has a mild, sweet flavour with soft jelly-like pulp. It is often described as subtly tropical with hints of melon and cucumber. While edible, it is primarily grown for its remarkable ornamental value rather than its flavour.

Flowers: Produces elegant drooping clusters of pale green to creamy-white bell-shaped flowers during spring and early summer, attracting bees and other beneficial pollinators.

Fruiting: Typically begins producing fruit within 5–8 years from seed under good growing conditions.

Care: Prefers full sun to partial shade, fertile free-draining soil and regular watering during establishment. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and encourages healthy growth.
