Seed Type: Fresh Magnolia Champaca seeds.
Origin: South and Southeast Asia.
Growth Habit: Evergreen ornamental tree reaching approximately 10–20 metres at maturity. Produces a dense canopy of glossy green foliage, making it an exceptional feature tree for tropical and subtropical gardens.
Germination: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing 10–15 mm deep in a free-draining seed-raising mix. Keep warm (22–30°C) and consistently moist. Germination typically occurs within 4–10 weeks, although some seeds may take longer.
Climate: To get a head start, or if you are in colder climates, start growing your seeds indoors so they are well established before summer. In the North Island, Magnolia Champaca grows well in warm, sheltered, frost-free locations with fertile soil. In the South Island, it is best grown in a greenhouse, conservatory or large container that can be protected from frost during winter.
Flowers: Produces spectacular golden-yellow to deep orange flowers with one of the richest and most powerful fragrances of any flowering tree. The blooms are highly prized for perfumes, essential oils and traditional floral garlands.
Fragrance: The flowers have an intensely sweet, rich floral perfume with notes of jasmine, ylang-ylang and tropical fruit. They are widely considered among the most fragrant flowers in the world.
Flowering: Typically begins flowering within 5–8 years from seed under good growing conditions.
